{"id":103,"date":"2019-10-12T20:44:48","date_gmt":"2019-10-12T10:44:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/?p=103"},"modified":"2025-03-14T13:33:19","modified_gmt":"2025-03-14T03:33:19","slug":"e-kit-installation-on-gt20","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/e-kit-installation-on-gt20\/","title":{"rendered":"E-Kit Installation on GT20"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Electric assist for bicycles is a growing market, but there are limited options for the recumbent cyclist.&nbsp; There are few original equipment manufacturers (OEM) fitting e-assist to trikes, and the problems with importing the batteries (and in-country support) makes the OEM fit problematic in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Essentially we are left with the do-it-yourself option, whether a dealer does it or it is truly DIY!<\/p>\n<p>The choice between a hub motor (a motor built into a wheel) or mid-drive (motor built into the bottom bracket and crankset) is a bit personal, though finding a hub motor with the right width for the trike\u2019s rear wheel spacing and gear options can be a challenge.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-105\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GT20-E-Kit-01.jpg?resize=392%2C261&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"E-Kit drive\" width=\"392\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GT20-E-Kit-01.jpg?w=2074&amp;ssl=1 2074w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GT20-E-Kit-01.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GT20-E-Kit-01.jpg?w=1250&amp;ssl=1 1250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GT20-E-Kit-01.jpg?w=1875&amp;ssl=1 1875w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/>For this fitment, we have chosen the Bafang BBS02 mid-drive, a well known brand with a number of re-sellers in Australia.&nbsp; The BBS** series are available in a range of powers, from 250 watt to over 1 kilowatt.<\/p>\n<p>Talking of power, a quick word on the legals is called for.&nbsp; Electric Assist bicycles in Australia are limited to 200 watt power, <em>unless<\/em> the bike complies with European directive EN15194 and is certified as complying.&nbsp; (Commonly termed a Pedelec, 250 watt max.)&nbsp; Queensland is further limited to 25kmh with power assistance.&nbsp; This rules out any DIY kit from complying with the 250 watt requirement as the certification applies to the whole bike\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>We have chosen a 350watt version, and will be de-rating it via the software options available.&nbsp; Why 350 watt?&nbsp; Apparently the internal wiring is somewhat heavier than the 250 watt unit.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-104 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Bafang-Kit.jpg?resize=426%2C426&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Bafang E-kit\" width=\"426\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Bafang-Kit.jpg?w=945&amp;ssl=1 945w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Bafang-Kit.jpg?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 426px) 100vw, 426px\" \/>So what\u2019s in a kit?<\/p>\n<p>The drive unit, display\/controller, e-brake levers, speed sensor, and wiring harness.&nbsp; We added a gear change sensor, separate brake switches in case we wanted to keep the OEM levers, a 130mm BCD chain ring adapter, and some extension cables.&nbsp; Plus a 36 volt 10 amp hour battery.<\/p>\n<p>Our installation is on the popular Greenspeed GT20 Recumbent Trike.&nbsp; Note this is not a factory supported option.<\/p>\n<p>Fitment is straight forward. The existing bottom crankset and bracket is removed and the BBS02 installed in their place. Brake levers are replaced, and the display and controller mounted.&nbsp; By far the most time was spent on mounting the controller and display, followed by tidying up the wiring.<\/p>\n<p>The e-kit added approximately 8kg to the weight of the trike.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-106 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GT20-E-Kit-02.jpg?resize=426%2C284&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"E-kit Controller\" width=\"426\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GT20-E-Kit-02.jpg?w=2074&amp;ssl=1 2074w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GT20-E-Kit-02.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GT20-E-Kit-02.jpg?w=1250&amp;ssl=1 1250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GT20-E-Kit-02.jpg?w=1875&amp;ssl=1 1875w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 426px) 100vw, 426px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the beauties of the Bafang kit is the ability to configure the software, one of the downsides is the ability to configure the software\u2026.&nbsp; Some of this is because of the 200 watt limit we\u2019ve applied, but also the software settings selected. &nbsp;The motor can be more or less aggressive in its response if desired.&nbsp; Note too that the BBS** series are not torque sensing \u2013 they don\u2019t care how hard you\u2019re pedaling, just that the pedals are turning.&nbsp; Pedals turning = boost applied.<\/p>\n<p>Best results are gained by using the gears to keep pedaling in the 60 \u2013 70 RPM range.&nbsp; (At 90rpm you\u2019re pedaling faster than the no load motor speed, and you probably don\u2019t need e-assist!)<\/p>\n<p>Electric assist is (another) subject that divides cyclists.&nbsp;
