{"id":697,"date":"2025-04-12T18:01:42","date_gmt":"2025-04-12T08:01:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/?p=697"},"modified":"2025-04-12T18:09:17","modified_gmt":"2025-04-12T08:09:17","slug":"cargo-quad-version-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/cargo-quad-version-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Cargo Quad Version 3"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the success of the initial and second cargo quad conversions (and to be honest, missing the versatility of the cargo carrier in our fleet), thoughts turned to making another one, though this time making the complete frame instead of doing a conversion of another trike.<br>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Significant time was spent staring at a drawing program until I thought I had enough details to start fabrication.&nbsp; This one would be made from common mild steel as for some reason it is quite hard to find more exotic materials in small quantities in this country.&nbsp; And for a prototype that was likely to see several modifications readily available materials were the go!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The specification was again based around using a Bafang e-assist kit, an internal geared hub as a transmission, and as near as a 600 x 600mm cargo platform as practical.&nbsp; To save some time we re-cycled (get it?) some parts salvaged from written off trikes, being the steering knuckles and the seat.<br>&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"736\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Cruciform-frame-e1741930680897.jpg?resize=600%2C736&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Front cross frame for recumbent trike\" class=\"wp-image-700\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cruciform Frame. This double freewheel (using BMX parts) is not seen as a long term solution as manufacture and assembly is time consuming and fiddly, although service parts are readily available and cheap.<br>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The overall weight is not insignificant at a few grams under 40kg, but for an e-assist equipped cargo hauler it is competitive with commercial bike offerings, eg an Urban Arrow starts at 48kg and climbs from there.&nbsp; An adapter was made and a 34T chainring fitted, improving the overall gearing immensely.&nbsp; At least now if the e-kit dies there is some hope of getting home again!<br>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The steering was quite highly geared, meaning that small handlebar movement gives a proportionally larger wheel response.&nbsp; This isn\u2019t really noticeable in normal riding other than to make the steering feel heavier than a sports trike.&nbsp; But that\u2019s in keeping with its mission, I guess, but is something we will experiment with at a later stage.&nbsp; The final drive only needed a chain tensioner to manage the chain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chainrings selected were decided based on fitting the largest practicable size to lower the chain tension (and hence wear), but in reality, were really determined by the sprocket available for the Sturmey Archer hub, ie 25T.&nbsp; In the end we chose a 34\/25 primary drive, and 30\/32 final drive.&nbsp; This works admirably with the e-assist yet is still low enough to ride un-assisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is this the final design?&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No, of course not.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This one is very usable as is and will be used as an alternate to a car where possible and improvements will be noted as they appear.&nbsp; We don\u2019t envisage much change to the basic geometry and mechanicals but of course the door is wide open to customisation!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/DTRecumbents\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/RIght-steering-arm.jpg?resize=400%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Right steering arm of recumbent, with mirror\" class=\"wp-image-705\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We now have our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dtrecumbents.com.au\/CargoQuad.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DT Recumbent Cargo Quad Web page<\/a> up and running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pricing starts from AU$7,200 for a single-wheel-drive version with a Bafang e-assist and Sturmey Archer IGH.
